The APCOA brand traces its origins back to 1947 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, where it was founded as the Airport Parking Corporation of America. The European arm was established in 1970 in Stuttgart, Germany, eventually becoming independent from its American parent. Today, APCOA is the leading parking infrastructure operator in Europe, managing over 1.8 million parking spaces across 13 countries.

In early 2024, the global investment firm Strategic Value Partners (SVP) completed a full acquisition of APCOA Parking Holdings, taking over from previous majority owner Centerbridge Partners. This acquisition places the ultimate ownership under a US-headquartered global alternative investment firm, while the group's operational headquarters remain in Stuttgart, Germany.
