Simplified Payment Verification, or SPV, is a fundamental concept in the blockchain ecosystem, originally described in the Bitcoin Whitepaper by Satoshi Nakamoto. It allows lightweight clients to verify that a transaction has been included in a block without necessitating the download of the entire blockchain history. This process significantly enhances the scalability and usability of peer-to-peer electronic cash systems.
Technically, SPV relies on Merkle Proofs and Block Headers. Users only need to verify the proof-of-work in the headers and confirm the transaction's position in the Merkle tree. While it was a core part of the original Bitcoin design, it is most actively championed and infra-structurally supported today by the BSV Blockchain ecosystem to enable instant, low-cost microtransactions.
