The Mercedes-Benz and Setra bus brands are part of the prestigious Daimler Buses division. Setra, originally founded in 1951 by the Kässbohrer company in Ulm, Germany, became a pioneer in the industry with the introduction of the first 'S8' self-supporting (Selbsttragend) bus body, which gave the brand its name. Mercedes-Benz, with its deep roots in the invention of the automobile, has been a dominant force in bus manufacturing since the late 19th century.
In 1995, the bus division of Mercedes-Benz merged with Kässbohrer’s bus business to form EvoBus GmbH. This union combined the luxury and engineering excellence of Setra's grand touring coaches with the robust versatility of Mercedes-Benz's urban and intercity bus lines. Today, manufacturing is centered in Neu-Ulm and Mannheim (Germany), Hoşdere (Turkey), and Ligny-en-Barrois (France).
The brands are currently under the ultimate ownership of Daimler Truck AG, which was independentally listed following its spin-off from the former Daimler AG (now Mercedes-Benz Group AG) in late 2021. Daimler Truck AG remains one of the world's largest commercial vehicle manufacturers, focusing on sustainable transportation through electric and hydrogen-powered mobility.
