Alpro is a pioneering brand in the plant-based food industry, established in 1980 in Belgium. The brand specializes in milk alternatives derived from soy, almonds, oats, and other plant sources. Over the decades, it has grown from a niche Belgian company into a dominant European market leader.
In terms of ownership, Alpro was acquired by the American food giant WhiteWave Foods in 2009. Later, in 2017, the multinational corporation Danone acquired WhiteWave Foods, bringing Alpro under its global umbrella. Today, Alpro continues to operate as a key brand within Danone’s plant-based division, reflecting the parent company's strategic shift toward health-conscious and sustainable food options.
Manufacturing for Alpro products takes place at several specialized facilities across Europe. The main production hub remains in Wevelgem, Belgium, which is one of the largest plant-based dairy alternative factories in the world. Additional manufacturing sites are located in Issenheim, France, and Kettering, United Kingdom, to serve their respective regional markets efficiently.
