Olvid is a high-security instant messaging platform distinguished by its architecture that eliminates the need for a centralized directory of users. Launched specifically to address privacy concerns in professional and governmental communications, the application uses a decentralized model where cryptographic identities are generated locally on the user's device. This design ensures that not even the service provider has access to user metadata or contact lists, setting it apart from traditional encrypted apps.
The development and maintenance of the software take place in France, adhering to rigorous European data protection standards. Olvid has gained significant recognition for its security protocols, notably receiving the First Level Security Certification (CSPN) from the French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI). This certification validates its robustness for use in sensitive environments, including adoption by the French government for internal ministerial communications.
Originally an independent startup founded by cybersecurity experts, Olvid's trajectory changed in 2024 when it was acquired by the French defensive company DCI Group. This acquisition was aimed at integrating Olvid's secure communication capabilities into a broader sovereign digital security offering. Under this new ownership, Olvid continues to operate as a critical tool for secure, metadata-free communication while benefiting from the strategic resources of a major state-linked defense actor.
