Dell is a cornerstone of the global computing industry, established with a vision to revolutionize how technology is designed and sold. Founded in 1984 by Michael Dell, the company began as a dorm-room startup called PC's Limited and grew into one of the largest technology corporations in the world. Its business model was originally based on selling custom-configured computers directly to consumers, a strategy that allowed it to bypass traditional retail markups and dominate the market throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Today, Dell operates a massive global supply chain. While a significant portion of its manufacturing takes place in China, the company maintains assembly facilities and specialized production centers across the globe, including in the United States, Malaysia, Brazil, Poland, and India. This distributed manufacturing approach allows Dell to serve its international customer base efficiently while balancing logistics and local market requirements.
Ownership of the brand has seen significant transitions over the decades. After many years as a public company, Dell was taken private in 2013 by Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners. However, following the landmark acquisition of EMC Corporation in 2016—the largest tech merger in history at the time—the company transformed into Dell Technologies and eventually returned to the public markets. It remains a leader in both consumer hardware and enterprise-level infrastructure and software solutions.
