Dualit is a prestigious British manufacturer of kitchen and catering equipment, most famous for its iconic, heavy-duty toasters. The brand was founded in 1945 by Max Gort-Barten, a German-born inventor who moved to London. After serving in the British army during World War II, he purchased a factory in Camberwell to produce his inventions, eventually naming the company Dualit after his 'Dual-Light' electric heater.
Today, Dualit remains an independent family-owned business, with headquarters and manufacturing facilities located in Crawley, West Sussex. The company is unique in its commitment to longevity and repairability; its flagship 'Classic' toasters are still hand-assembled in the UK by individual workers who often sign the base plate of the unit. While the high-end Classic range is manufactured in Britain, some of the brand's other product lines, including certain kettles and coffee machines, are designed in the UK but manufactured in China to provide more accessible price points.
The brand has successfully navigated the transition from commercial catering equipment to a staple of high-end domestic kitchens. Beyond toasters, Dualit has expanded into coffee machines and even operates its own coffee capsule production plant in the UK, maintaining its reputation for engineering excellence and British industrial design.
