Discover where a brand or product originates
Discover is a major American financial services brand that first rose to prominence in the mid-1980s as a credit card product originally launched by the retail giant Sears, Roebuck and Co. Its introduction was a significant event in the financial world, as it challenged the dominance of the Visa and MasterCard networks by offering no annual fee and pioneered the concept of 'Cashback' rewards for every purchase.
Today, Discover is operated by Discover Financial Services, a direct banking and payment services company. While it was once part of Dean Witter Financial Services Group and Morgan Stanley, it became an independent company in 2007. Manufacturing of the physical cards primarily takes place within the United States, and its signature payment network is managed globally. In 2024, a major acquisition announcement was made by Capital One to purchase Discover, a move expected to finalize and reshape its ultimate ownership structure by 2025 and 2026, pending regulatory approval.
Discover is recognized as one of the largest card issuers in the U.S. and operates the Discover Network, which is accepted at millions of merchant locations worldwide through its Pulse and Diners Club International partnerships.
