Welch's is an iconic American brand founded in 1869 by Thomas Bramwell Welch in Vineland, New Jersey. The brand's history is deeply rooted in the invention of a method to pasteurize grape juice to stop fermentation, originally intended for producing non-alcoholic sacramental wine. This innovation pioneered the modern fruit juice industry. Welch's Concord Grape juice is made from grapes grown primarily in North America, including regions like the Finger Lakes in New York, the shores of Lake Erie, and the Yakima Valley in Washington.
Since 1952, Welch's has been uniquely structured as the processing and marketing arm of the National Grape Cooperative Association. This is a cooperative made up of approximately 700 family farmers across the United States and Canada. Because it is owned by a cooperative, the brand remains committed to returning profits directly to the farmers who grow the grapes. The brand is globally recognized for its juices, jams, and jellies, maintaining a headquarters in Concord, Massachusetts. While most production is concentrated in U.S. facilities closer to the vineyards, Welch's also engages in international distribution and licensing agreements to serve global markets.
