Walgreen Sr. purchased the pharmacy where he worked in 1901. Over the century, it grew into one of the largest pharmacy store chains in the United States.

Today, the brand is owned by the Walgreens Boots Alliance, an integrated healthcare, pharmacy, and retail leader formed through the 2014 merger of Walgreens and Alliance Boots.
