Covalact is one of the most recognized and traditional dairy brands in Romania, with roots dating back to 1969 in Sfântu Gheorghe. Originally established as a state-owned enterprise known as the Covasna Milk Collection and Processing Enterprise, it pioneered several local dairy specialties, most notably its iconic 'Brânzică de casă' (cottage cheese).
Manufacturing remains concentrated in Romania at its primary production facilities in Sfântu Gheorghe and Miercurea Ciuc. These plants process significant volumes of milk sourced from local farmers, maintaining the brand's reputation for high-quality, authentic Romanian dairy products.
Following the transition to a market economy, the brand underwent several ownership changes. After being managed by the investment fund SigmaBleyzer for several years, Covalact was acquired in 2017 by the French dairy giant Lactalis. Today, Covalact operates under the Lactalis Romania umbrella alongside other prominent local brands like Albalact and Zuzu, consolidating its position within the portfolio of the world's largest dairy products corporation.
