Maarud is one of Norway's most iconic snack brands, best known for its 'Potetgull' (potato gold), a term the company historically trademarked. The brand has its origins in the Maarud farm in Sør-Odal, where production began in the 1930s. Today, it remains a dominant player in the Scandinavian snack market, particularly in Norway, where its factory in Disenå continues to produce the majority of its potato-based products using locally sourced potatoes.
Ownership of the brand has transitioned through several major corporations over the decades. Originally a family-run enterprise, it was sold to Kraft Foods (now Mondelez) before being acquired by Herkules Capital. In 2014, the brand was purchased by Intersnack Group, a major German multinational snack producer. As part of Intersnack, Maarud operates under the umbrella of Estrella Maarud, maintaining its heritage while benefiting from a global distribution network.
