Bose Corporation is a globally recognized American audio equipment manufacturer. The brand was founded in 1964 by Dr. Amar Bose, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who was driven by a desire to create speakers that could replicate the immersive experience of a live concert hall. Headquartered in Framingham, Massachusetts, the company has grown from a small research project into a multi-billion dollar leader in acoustics and noise-cancellation technology.
While the company’s engineering and research and development remain centered in the United States, its manufacturing footprint is global to ensure supply chain efficiency. Bose products are currently manufactured across several locations including the United States, Mexico (specifically Tijuana and San Luis Río Colorado), China, and Malaysia (Batu Kawan). In recent years, the company has streamlined operations by partnering with contract manufacturers like Flex to manage some of its international facilities.
Bose is famously known for its unique ownership structure. In 2011, Dr. Amar Bose donated the majority of the company's non-voting shares to MIT. This ensures that the university receives annual dividends to support its research and education missions, while allowing Bose to remain a private company focused on long-term innovation rather than short-term public market pressures.
