The brand was originally created by Agustín Trigo Mirallès in Spain as 'Naranjina' and debuted at the Marseille Trade Fair in 1935, where it was later refined into the French-Algerian staple it is today. Historically, the brand was a cornerstone of French soft drink culture under the ownership of Compagnie Française des Produits d'Orangina.

In the modern era, ownership of the brand is split geographically. In most European markets, including Germany (as indicated by the Schweppes Deutschland license on the label), the brand is part of Suntory Beverage & Food Europe. The Japanese conglomerate Suntory Holdings acquired the brand in 2009 to expand its global beverage portfolio. In Germany, the product is manufactured and distributed through licensing agreements, notably involving Schweppes Deutschland GmbH, which ensures the drink meets local consumer preferences while maintaining the original recipe's standards.
