Oatly! is a pioneer in the plant-based beverage industry, specifically known for its oat-based milk alternatives. Founded by brothers Rickard and Björn Öste in the early 1990s, the brand was born out of research at Lund University in Sweden. The company's mission was to create a nutritious and environmentally sustainable alternative to traditional dairy milk using Swedish oats. Today, Oatly! has become a global phenomenon, recognized for its quirky, minimalist packaging and provocative marketing campaigns.

While the brand originated in Sweden and maintains a significant production base there (notably in Landskrona), Oatly! has expanded its manufacturing footprint significantly to meet global demand. It now operates several production facilities across Europe, North America, and Asia. In the United Kingdom, for instance, much of the supply is imported from European facilities, though the company has made strategic investments in local production plants in New Jersey and Utah in the USA, and Singapore and China for the Asian market.

Technically a public company (Oatly Group AB) listed on the NASDAQ, its ownership structure has seen significant investment from large entities. The ultimate ownership is spearheaded by a majority-control vehicle involving the Belgian family investment firm Verlinvest and the Chinese state-owned enterprise China Resources. This joint venture, along with smaller stakes from celebrity investors and private equity firms like Blackstone, oversees the brand's global expansion from its headquarters in Malmö, Sweden.
