Following the 1999 merger of Exxon and Mobil, Esso became a primary retail brand for the newly formed ExxonMobil Corporation outside of the United States (where the Exxon and Mobil brands are more prevalent). Manufacturing and refining of Esso products occur in multiple countries, utilizing ExxonMobil's global network of refineries and integrated chemical plants. The brand remains under the ultimate ownership of ExxonMobil, a multinational oil and gas corporation headquartered in Irving, Texas. While ExxonMobil owns the brand, local operations are often managed through regional subsidiaries like Esso Petroleum Company, Limited in the UK or Imperial Oil in Canada.
