Thermos is a globally recognized brand that traces its heritage back to scientific innovations in Germany at the turn of the 20th century. The vacuum insulation technology was commercialized by Thermos GmbH in 1904, eventually leading to the founding of separate branches in the United States and the United Kingdom. Today, the brand remains the gold standard for portable temperature retention.
The brand has undergone several ownership changes in its long history, transitioning from its German and American roots to Japanese ownership. Since 1989, the Thermos brand has been owned by the Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation, a significant player in the industrial gas and chemical sectors. This acquisition unified the various international branches of the brand under a single corporate umbrella.
While the technology originated in Europe and the brand's corporate headquarters is in Japan, manufacturing for the consumer market is highly globalized. Most modern Thermos products, including those sold in Finland through retailers like Motonet, are manufactured in state-of-the-art facilities in China, though specialty lines may occasionally be produced in other regions.
