Founded in 2007 by Gunther D'hondt and Maarten Krikken, the company is deeply inspired by Belgian surrealism and traditional craftsmanship. Their product range includes the famous "Dreamy Chocolate Hippos," fluffy marshmallows coated in Belgian chocolate, and a variety of artisanal hot cocoa and chai latte powders.

Production is divided based on product type to ensure quality: the solid chocolate confections like marshmallows and hippos are manufactured in Belgium, while their range of hot drinks and powders is produced in the Netherlands. Despite its global distribution and presence in premium specialty stores, Barú remains a relatively small, independent Belgian company headquartered in Diepenbeek. The brand is celebrated for using natural ingredients like bourbon vanilla and honey, avoiding artificial colors and flavors in its quest to create "surreally good treats."
