Melitta is a historic German brand that revolutionized coffee preparation when its founder, Melitta Bentz, invented the first drip brew paper coffee filter in 1908 in Dresden. Dissatisfied with the grounds left in coffee brewed with the methods of the time, she used a brass cup punctured with holes and a piece of blotting paper from her son's schoolbook to create a cleaner cup of coffee. This innovation led to the founding of M. Bentz in 1908, which eventually became the Melitta Group.
Today, the brand remains a family-owned business headquartered in Minden, Germany. While the company has a global manufacturing presence—with major filter production facilities in Clearwater, Florida for North America and Brazil for South America—the 'Original' filters sold in European markets (like the 1x4 size shown) are primarily manufactured at their production sites in Germany. The brand is synonymous with the 'pour-over' method and continues to lead the market in coffee filtration and accessories under the stewardship of the Melitta Group Management SE & Co. KG.
