Altra Footwear was founded in 2009 by Golden Harper and Brian Beckstead in Utah, United States. The Lone Peak, named after a prominent peak in the Wasatch Range, is the brand's signature trail running shoe, famous for introducing the 'Zero Drop' platform and the 'FootShape' toe box designed to allow toes to splay naturally.

Initially launched through the founders' running store, the brand quickly gained a cult following among ultramarathoners and hikers. In 2011, Altra was acquired by ICON Health & Fitness. In 2018, the brand was acquired by VF Corporation, a global leader in branded lifestyle apparel, footwear, and accessories. Today, while the brand maintains its design and engineering roots in the United States, manufacturing is primarily outsourced to specialized footwear facilities in Vietnam and China.
