Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day was inspired by Thelma A. Meyer, a real-life mother of nine from Iowa, whose daughter Monica Hogan founded the brand in 1999. The brand was built on the philosophy of creating cleaning products that smell like a garden but work like the dickens, utilizing plant-derived ingredients and essential oils. The aesthetic and scent profiles, such as Lavender, Lemon Verbena, and Basil, were designed to offer a more pleasant alternative to harsh chemical odors.
In 2008, the brand was acquired by S. C. Johnson & Son, Inc., a major global manufacturer of household cleaning supplies. Since the acquisition, the brand has expanded its footprint significantly but continues to market itself with a focus on its Midwestern roots and authentic origins. Most of the manufacturing operations remain centered in the United States, supporting the brand's image of domestic quality and specialized formulation.
Today, Mrs. Meyer's exists as a leading label in the 'natural' cleaning segment of the market. Its ultimate owner, S. C. Johnson, is a privately held American company headquartered in Racine, Wisconsin. This ownership has allowed the brand to leverage massive distribution networks while maintaining the specific brand identity that made it a household name.
