Originally gaining fame for inventing the first metal-framed backpack in 1936, the brand became a staple for French campers and the military. Over the decades, it expanded into technical apparel, footwear, and outdoor furniture, positioning itself as a leader in the European outdoor market.

While the brand's heritage is deeply rooted in France, its manufacturing has diversified globally. Production takes place in various locations including France, Tunisia, Hungary, and Asia to meet global demand. Following various restructurings and acquisitions throughout the 2000s, the brand transitioned through different ownership groups, including a significant period under the Lafuma Group (which included brands like Millet and Eider).
