Burton was founded in 1977 by Jake Burton Carpenter in Londonderry, Vermont. The brand is credited with inventing the modern snowboard and transforming the sport from a niche backyard activity into a global phenomenon. While the company began with handcrafted boards in a Vermont barn, it has grown into the world's leading snowboard brand. Manufacturing today is a global operation; while higher-end boards are often produced at the specialized SGP (Snowboard Garden of Producers) facility in Austria, other boards, bindings, and apparel are manufactured across Asia and North America. Burton remains a privately held family company, maintaining its independence from large corporate conglomerates to focus on its core community of riders.
