Bugatti is a legendary name in the automotive world, founded in 1909 by the Italian-born Ettore Bugatti in Molsheim, Alsace. At the time of its founding, the region was part of the German Empire, but it returned to France after World War I, solidifying Bugatti's identity as a quintessential French luxury brand. The brand is celebrated for its historic racing triumphs and iconic models like the Type 35 and Type 57 Atlantic, which blended artistic design with extreme engineering.
After several decades of dormancy following the founder's death, the brand was briefly revived in Italy in the late 1980s before being acquired by the Volkswagen Group in 1998. Volkswagen restored production to the brand's spiritual home in Molsheim, France, constructing a state-of-the-art facility known as the 'Atelier.' In late 2021, a significant shift in ownership occurred with the creation of Bugatti Rimac. This joint venture combined Bugatti’s heritage with the electric vehicle expertise of the Croatian company Rimac Automobili.
As of 2026, Bugatti remains headquartered in Molsheim, where all its hypercars—including the Veyron, Chiron, and the latest hybrid masterpiece, the Tourbillon—are hand-assembled. While the final assembly is centered in France, the brand now benefits from technological development and powertrain engineering conducted at the Rimac Campus in Croatia. The current ownership is led by the Rimac Group as the majority stakeholder, marking a new era of electrified performance for the historic marque.
