Volvo is a premier Swedish brand with a heritage dating back to 1927, founded in Gothenburg by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson. Originally established as a subsidiary of the ball bearing manufacturer SKF, Volvo has since evolved into a global leader in automotive safety and innovation.

Today, the 'Volvo' brand is shared by two distinct entities: Volvo Car AB (Volvo Cars) and AB Volvo (Volvo Group). Volvo Cars, which produces passenger vehicles, was sold to Ford Motor Company in 1999 and subsequently acquired by the Chinese automotive giant Zhejiang Geely Holding Group in 2010. While Geely remains the majority owner, Volvo Cars is publicly listed on the Nasdaq Stockholm. AB Volvo, on the other hand, remains a separate Swedish-based entity focused on trucks, buses, and construction equipment.

Manufacturing for Volvo is highly globalized. Key production facilities for passenger cars are located in Sweden (Torslanda), Belgium (Ghent), the United States (South Carolina), and China (Chengdu, Daqing, and Taizhou), with a new electric-vehicle-only plant scheduled to open in Slovakia in 2026. Volvo Group (trucks) maintains an even wider footprint, with assembly plants in 18 countries including the USA, Brazil, India, and France.
