Bertolli grew from a small neighborhood shop in Lucca, Tuscany, founded by Francesco Bertolli and his wife Caterina in 1865. The brand became a pioneer in the olive oil industry, being the first to export olive oil to the United States. Today, it remains one of the world's most recognized olive oil brands, though its production and ownership have transitioned significantly since its local Italian beginnings.
While the brand's heritage is deeply rooted in Italy, Bertolli olive oil is now produced using olives sourced from various Mediterranean regions, primarily Spain, Italy, and Greece, and is bottled in multiple locations to serve global markets. The brand underwent several corporate ownership changes, previously being part of Unilever's portfolio before being sold to the Spanish food giant Deoleo, S.A. As of the current period, Deoleo remains the ultimate owner, managing the brand from its headquarters in Spain while maintaining the classic Italian branding that made Bertolli a household name.
