Lolita, also known by her native name Tokitae, was an orca who became the center of a long-standing attraction at the Miami Seaquarium in Florida. Captured in 1970 from the waters of Puget Sound in Washington State, she was sold to the aquarium and spent over five decades in captivity, becoming one of the most famous and controversial marine mammals in the world. Her history is deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest's Southern Resident orca population.
Ownership of the Miami Seaquarium and the brand associated with Lolita has transitioned through several major entertainment companies over the years. Originally opened by Fred D. Coppock and Captain W.B. Gray, the facility's ownership moved to entities like Wometco Enterprises and later Palace Entertainment. In recent years, the management and ownership have stabilized under The Dolphin Company, a Mexico-based global operator of dolphinariums and marine parks.
Before her passing in 2023, plans were actively being developed by the current owners in partnership with non-profit groups and private donors to relocate her to a sea pen in her home waters. Today, the legacy of Lolita remains a significant part of the Miami Seaquarium brand, though the focus has shifted toward animal welfare and the memory of her long residency.
