Brand History and Origin

DPD, which originally stood for Deutscher Paket Dienst, was founded in 1976 in Germany by 18 leading German freight forwarders. The goal was to provide a more efficient parcel delivery system for business customers. It quickly expanded beyond Germany to become a major European player in the logistics sector.

Business Evolution and Ownership

In the early 2000s, the French national postal service, La Poste, began acquiring a majority stake through its express subsidiary, GeoPost. By 2001, GeoPost became the main shareholder, and the brand was eventually rebranded as part of DPDgroup (now known as Geopost). Today, it is one of Europe's leading parcel delivery networks, operating across more than 50 countries.

Global Operations

While its roots are German, DPD is now a quintessentially French-owned global entity. It utilizes a vast network of local subsidiaries and franchises to manage domestic deliveries. The ultimate ownership lies with Le Groupe La Poste, a state-owned enterprise in France, which oversees the company's vast international logistics, sustainability initiatives, and digital delivery solutions.
