The brand Philips originated in the Netherlands, where Frits and Gerard Philips founded the company in 1891, initially focusing on carbon-filament lamps before diversifying into global electronics and home appliances.

Today, the manufacturing of Philips coffee machines is primarily centered in Europe, specifically in Romania, following the acquisition of the Italian brand Saeco. Some components and specific models are also manufactured in China to support global distribution. Ownership of the domestic appliance division underwent a significant change in 2021 when the Dutch parent company, Royal Philips, sold the 'Philips Domestic Appliances' division to Hillhouse Investment, a global private equity firm. This division now operates under the corporate name Versuni, though it continues to use the Philips brand name under a long-term license agreement.
