It was established as a 'challenger' brand, designed to provide a low-cost, digital-first alternative to the traditional, larger utility companies in the Netherlands. By focusing on online self-service and competitive pricing, it quickly became a significant player in the Dutch retail energy landscape.

The brand was originally part of the Essent group, which itself has undergone major international acquisitions. In 2009, the German energy giant RWE acquired Essent (and its brands like energiedirect.nl). Later, due to industry restructuring and the shift toward renewable energy, the brand became part of E.ON following a major asset swap with RWE in 2019. This transition solidified its position as a key retail brand under one of Europe's largest energy utility operators, while maintaining its distinct Dutch identity and operations based in 's-Hertogenbosch.
