Giro was founded in 1985 by Jim Gentes in Santa Cruz, California. The brand revolutionized the cycling industry with the introduction of the first lightweight, high-performance cycling helmet, the Prolight. Over the decades, Giro has expanded its product line to include premium cycling footwear, apparel, and snow sports gear, maintaining a reputation for innovation, safety, and performance-driven design.
While the brand's research and development headquarters remain in California, the majority of Giro's manufacturing operations are outsourced to high-tech facilities in Asia, primarily China and Vietnam, to meet global demand for specialized carbon fiber and foam molding technologies.
In 2016, Giro became part of the Vista Outdoor portfolio following Vista's acquisition of the Action Sports division from BRG Sports. As of 2024 and looking toward 2026, the brand is undergoing structural changes as Vista Outdoor works through a corporate split and potential sales of its Revelyst segment (which houses Giro) to investment firms like Strategic Value Partners or MNC Capital. This positioning ensures Giro remains a leading global player in the outdoor and sporting goods markets.
