Fisherman's Friend is a globally recognized brand of strong menthol lozenges. The brand's history began in 1865 in Fleetwood, Lancashire, United Kingdom, where a pharmacist named James Lofthouse developed a liquid containing menthol and eucalyptus to help fishermen deal with respiratory problems in the harsh conditions of the North Sea.
The product eventually transformed from a liquid into the famous lozenge or pastille form. Today, the brand remains centrally located in Fleetwood, where it is produced by Lofthouse of Fleetwood Ltd. Despite its global reach to more than 100 countries, the manufacturing remains rooted in its original British hometown. The brand is still owned by the Lofthouse family, maintaining its status as an independent, family-run business over 150 years after its inception.
