Continente Milho Frito com Sal is a popular snack in Portugal consisting of crunchy, salted fried corn kernels. The brand, Continente, is the flagship retail banner of MC Sonae (formerly Sonae MC), which is the food retail division of the Sonae group, one of Portugal's largest multinational conglomerates.
While the Continente brand name originally had roots in France via the Promodès group in the 1970s, it was established as a joint venture in Portugal in 1985. Following a series of acquisitions, including the purchase of Carrefour's stake in the early 2000s, it became an entirely Portuguese-owned and operated brand. Today, it is the market leader in the Portuguese food retail sector.
The product is manufactured in Portugal, typically produced for the retailer by specialized local snack manufacturers. The ultimate ownership lies with Sonae SGPS, S.A., a public company headquartered in Maia, Portugal, which remains under the significant control of the Azevedo family.
