Eta: A Cornerstone of New Zealand Snacking History

Eta is a household name in New Zealand, recognized primarily for its wide range of savory snacks, including their iconic potato chips and roasted peanuts. The brand's history is deeply rooted in the local food industry, having served as a staple in Kiwi pantries for decades. It has historically been competitive in the snack food market by emphasizing quality ingredients and local manufacturing.

Ownership and Global Integration

While Eta began as a local industrial brand in New Zealand, its ownership has transitioned through major corporate mergers and acquisitions. Today, the brand is owned by Griffin's Snacks (Griffin's Food Company), which is the largest biscuit and snack manufacturer in New Zealand. Griffin's itself has seen various international owners, including Danone and Pacific Equity Partners.

Current Corporate Structure

In 2014, the brand and its parent company were acquired by Universal Robina Corporation (URC), a major multinational based in the Philippines. This acquisition integrated the traditional New Zealand brand into a sprawling Asia-Pacific food network. In late 2021, a significant shift occurred when Intersnack—a European snack giant—entered into a joint venture and eventually completed the acquisition of the Griffin's group (including Eta) from URC. This places the brand under the ultimate stewardship of German-based Intersnack Group, ensuring global distribution expertise while maintaining its manufacturing presence in its home country.
