Gatorade was originally developed in 1965 by a team of researchers at the University of Florida College of Medicine to help the school's football team, the Gators, perform better in the heat. The formula was designed to replenish carbohydrates and electrolytes lost through sweat. It was later commercialized by Stokely-Van Camp, which was eventually acquired by the Quaker Oats Company in 1983. In 2001, PepsiCo acquired Quaker Oats, bringing Gatorade into its massive global portfolio.
Today, Gatorade holds a dominant position in the international sports drink market. For the Brazilian market, the product is manufactured locally in PepsiCo's facilities, ensuring fresh supply and distribution across the country. As of 2024 and beyond, it remains under the ultimate ownership of PepsiCo, headquartered in New York, USA. The brand continues to lead the category through scientific research and various flavor innovations like the Lemon (Limão) variant seen here.
