Crimson Snow is a premium 'club' apple variety, technically known as the MC38 cultivar. The variety was discovered by chance in 1999 as a seedling in an orchard in Harcourt, Australia, by grower Allan McLean. Its name is derived from the striking contrast between its deep crimson-red skin and its bright, snow-white interior flesh.
While the brand originated in Australia, it is currently managed globally by Kiku Variety Management, a specialist variety management company based in South Tyrol, Italy. The apple is a 'club variety,' meaning it is only grown under license by specific partners to maintain high quality and market stability.
Today, Crimson Snow is produced in multiple countries to ensure year-round availability. The primary commercial production occurs in Italy (notably by the VOG Consortium and Rivoira Group), France, Serbia, Switzerland, and its native Australia. It is highly valued in the retail market for its exceptional shelf life, resisting bruising and oxidation (browning) long after being sliced.
