Tate & Lyle sugar is one of Britain's most iconic household brands. The brand originated from the 1921 merger of two rival sugar refineries: Henry Tate & Sons and Abram Lyle & Sons. Henry Tate originally founded his business in Liverpool in 1859, while Abram Lyle established his refinery in London in 1881. The company is famous for its Golden Syrup, which holds the Guinness World Record for the world's oldest branding and packaging.

Today, the Tate & Lyle brand for retail sugar is owned by American Sugar Refining (ASR Group), which purchased the sugar refining business from Tate & Lyle PLC in 2010. While the manufacturing historically took place at the Thames Refinery in London, the supply chain involves cane sugar imported from various international locations, which is then refined and packaged in the UK. The ultimate owner, ASR Group, is a large multi-national agribusiness based in the United States, jointly owned by Florida Crystals Corporation and the Sugar Cane Growers Cooperative of Florida.
