KitKat is a chocolate-covered wafer bar confection created by Rowntree's of York in the United Kingdom in 1935. Originally called 'Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp', it was renamed to Kit Kat in 1937. The brand became a global household name, famous for its 'Have a break, have a KitKat' slogan.
In 1988, the Swiss multinational Nestlé acquired Rowntree's, taking over the KitKat brand worldwide, except in the United States. In the US, it is produced under license by The Hershey Company. For the European market, including Denmark, manufacturing typically occurs in large-scale facilities in the United Kingdom, Germany, or Bulgaria. Nestlé continues to be the ultimate owner and maintains its global headquarters in Switzerland.
