Camel Aktive is a variant of the legendary Camel tobacco brand, originally established in the United States in 1913. Known for its distinctive blend of Turkish and Virginia tobaccos, the Aktive line often incorporates capsule technology or specific filter designs aimed at different international markets. The brand's history is deeply rooted in the American tobacco industry, having been a flagship product for the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company for over a century.
Today, the ownership and manufacturing of Camel are split between two major global entities. In the United States, R. J. Reynolds (part of Reynolds American, a British American Tobacco subsidiary) maintains control. However, for all markets outside of the US, the brand was acquired by Japan Tobacco International (JTI). Consequently, manufacturing occurs in numerous facilities across Europe and Asia to serve global demand, while the ultimate strategic direction for the international version of the brand is managed from Switzerland by JTI.
