Sellotape is the leading brand of transparent adhesive tape in the United Kingdom and many other countries. The brand originated in West Acton, London, in 1937, where it was initially developed by Colin Kininmonth and George Gray. It became so popular that it has since become a generic trademark for clear sticky tape in British English and other Commonwealth nations.
Over the decades, the business passed through several hands, including ownership by Dickinson Robinson Group (DRG). In 2002, the brand was acquired by Henkel, a German multinational chemical and consumer goods company. Today, Henkel coordinates the brand's production and distribution globally, maintaining Sellotape's position as a household staple in offices, schools, and homes.
