The AK-47, also known as the Kalashnikov, is arguably the most famous assault rifle in history. Originally designed in the Soviet Union shortly after World War II, it was officially adopted by the Soviet Army in 1949. The rifle was designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, who aimed to create a robust, simple, and reliable weapon for the infantry. Its reputation for durability under harsh conditions has made it a global icon of military power and insurgency alike.

While the original design is Russian, manufacturing the AK-47 (and its numerous variants like the AKM and AK-74) has expanded worldwide. During the Cold War, the Soviet Union licensed the design freely to its allies in the Warsaw Pact and other socialist states. Today, it is produced in countries including Russia, China, Bulgaria, Romania, and even the United States by private manufacturers. The primary Russian producer remains Concern Kalashnikov.

The brand and its heritage are deeply rooted in the state-owned military-industrial complex of the Soviet Union. Currently, Concern Kalashnikov is the primary successor in Russia, operating under the umbrella of Rostec, a state-owned conglomerate. However, because the original design was not initially patented internationally, many companies globally manufacture 'Kalashnikov-style' rifles without direct financial ties to the original Russian entity.
