Philips, founded in 1891 in Eindhoven, Netherlands by Gerard Philips and his father Frederik, began as a manufacturer of carbon-filament lamps. Over more than a century, it evolved into one of the largest electronics conglomerates in the world before pivoting its focus toward health technology.
While the Philips brand is globally recognized, its ownership is now segmented by product category. The core 'Philips' brand is owned by Koninklijke Philips N.V. (Royal Philips), which focuses strictly on healthcare and medical devices. However, the consumer electronics division (televisions, audio) is largely licensed to and operated by TP Vision, based in Hong Kong, and the household appliances division (coffee makers, air fryers) was sold in 2021 to Hillhouse Capital and now operates as Versuni. Additionally, the lighting division was spun off into an independent company known as Signify, though it continues to use the Philips brand name under license.
Manufacturing occurs across a vast global network. Medical equipment is primarily produced in the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States, while consumer appliances and lighting are manufactured in various locations including China, Poland, and Brazil.
