The brand is credited with popularizing the tea bag in the United Kingdom during the mid-20th century. Today, the manufacturing of Tetley products occurs in multiple locations across the globe, including major facilities in Eaglescliffe, United Kingdom, as well as in India to serve regional markets.

Since 2000, Tetley has been owned by the Tata Group, a massive Indian multinational conglomerate. Specifically, it operates under the Tata Consumer Products division. While the brand maintains a strong British heritage and its main operational presence in the UK, its ultimate ownership is based in Mumbai, India. This acquisition marked a significant shift in the global tea industry, bringing an iconic British brand under the umbrella of one of India's largest corporate entities.
