The FED 5 is a classic 35mm rangefinder camera produced by the FED Factory in Kharkiv, Ukraine. The brand itself traces its origins back to the 1930s when production began in a labor commune named after Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky, which is where the acronym 'FED' comes from. Initially, these cameras were close copies of the German Leica II, helping to establish the photographic industry in the region.

Throughout the Soviet era, the FED factory was a major producer of cameras for the domestic market and export. The FED 5 series specifically was manufactured from the late 1970s until the early 1990s. While production of cameras has since ceased, the legacy of the brand remains significant among vintage photography enthusiasts for its mechanical durability and historical context. The FED plant today functions primarily as an aerospace and mechanical engineering facility under the name FED PJSC.
