Medalla Light is the flagship beer brand of Puerto Rico, known for its crisp and refreshing profile tailored for tropical climates. The brand was introduced in 1980 by Compañía Cervecera de Puerto Rico, a company with deep roots on the island dating back to 1937. Its name was inspired by the Pan-American Games held in Puerto Rico during its launch year.
Production takes place exclusively at the company's state-of-the-art facility in Mayagüez, on the western coast of Puerto Rico. The brewery utilizes the island's naturally soft water, which is a key component in achieving the beer's clean and balanced taste. Over the decades, it has become a cultural icon for Puerto Ricans, both on the island and in the diaspora.
The brand remains under the ownership of the Valdés family, who founded the original brewery. As one of the few large-scale independent breweries in the Caribbean, Compañía Cervecera de Puerto Rico has successfully expanded Medalla Light into several U.S. markets, including Florida and the Mid-Atlantic, while maintaining its status as a 100% Puerto Rican-owned and operated entity.
