Rompetrol is a leading energy brand with a complex history and a strong presence in the European and Central Asian markets. Originally established in Romania in 1974 as the state’s representative for the oil industry, the brand has evolved from a local operator into a major multinational energy player. Today, it serves as the main brand for KMG International N.V., operating an extensive network of fuel stations across Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, Georgia, and through various partnerships in other territories.
The core of Rompetrol's manufacturing is centered in Romania, specifically at the Petromidia Refinery in Năvodari—the largest and most advanced refinery in the country. This facility is complemented by the Vega Refinery in Ploiești, which specializes in niche products like bitumen and solvents. Together, these sites form a strategic hub for fuel and petrochemical production that services the Black Sea and Mediterranean regions.
The ultimate ownership of the Rompetrol brand lies with KazMunayGas (KMG), the national oil and gas company of Kazakhstan. Following a series of acquisitions starting in 2007, KMG assumed full control of the Rompetrol Group (now KMG International). This ownership structure provides a direct vertical integration from Kazakhstan's vast crude oil reserves to the gas pumps and industrial clients in Europe. The brand represents a significant economic bridge between Central Asian resources and European energy markets.
