Sunny Delight (commonly known as SunnyD) was originally developed in 1963 by Howard Dick and Philo West in Florida, United States. The drink was created as an alternative to orange juice and gained immense popularity for its bright orange color and distinctive citrus flavor. For decades, it was a staple in American households before expanding internationally into European and Latin American markets.

Over the years, the ownership of SunnyD has changed hands several times. After being owned by Procter & Gamble for a significant period, it was acquired by the private equity firm J.W. Childs Associates (now known as Prospect Hill Growth Partners). Today, the brand is owned by Harvest Hill Beverage Company, which is a portfolio company of the private equity firm Brynwood Partners. Manufacturing remains decentralized, with production facilities located in the United States and Spain to serve their respective regional markets efficiently.
