The brand was launched in 1971 by APD (Associated Potato Distributors), which later merged with other entities to become part of the Snack Brands Australia portfolio. Today, Cheezels are primarily manufactured in Australia, specifically at the Snack Brands plant in Smithfield, New South Wales. Ownership has transitioned over the decades, and as of 2016, the brand is owned by the Universal Robina Corporation (URC), a major multinational based in the Philippines. This acquisition integrated the classic Australian snack into one of the largest food and beverage companies in the ASEAN region.
