Clairol is a legendary name in the personal care industry, best known for revolutionizing home hair coloring. The brand was founded in the United States in 1931 by Lawrence and Joan Gelb after they discovered high-quality hair-dye preparations in France and brought the technology to the American market. Over the decades, Clairol became a household name with iconic campaigns like 'Does she... or doesn't she?' which successfully normalized hair coloring for millions of women.
Today, the brand's manufacturing footprint is global, with products produced in multiple locations including North America and Europe to serve diverse markets. Ownership of Clairol has shifted through several major conglomerates over the years. It was famously owned by Bristol-Myers Squibb and later acquired by Procter & Gamble in 2001.
In 2016, Clairol was part of a multi-billion dollar merger where it was sold to Wella (and its parent company, Coty). As of the 2020s, the brand is under the umbrella of Wella Company, which is primarily owned by the global investment firm KKR. This structure allows Clairol to remain a leader in the salon and retail hair care sectors worldwide.
