The brand originates from the legendary designs of Mikhail Kalashnikov, whose original AK-47 redefined modern infantry weaponry in the Soviet Union. Today, the brand is managed by the Kalashnikov Concern, which was established through the merger of Izhmash and the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant. These facilities have a long history of arms production dating back to the early 19th century.

Currently, Kalashnikov Concern is the primary producer of automatic and sniper weapons in Russia. While it was once a purely state-owned enterprise, it has transitioned to a public-private partnership. The ultimate ownership is split between the state-owned Rostec corporation and private investors, maintaining its status as a cornerstone of the Russian defense industry.
